With dual identities and a life deeply connected to both Hong Kong and Macao, Elizabeth traveled weekly between the two regions before the pandemic. As a mother to her young son, born in 2020 during the pandemic, Elizabeth faced unexpected challenges when border restrictions altered her life plans. Her son was delivered in Macao followed by a three-year quarantine program that separated Macao and Hong Kong. During these times of social restrictions, she commenced to embrace the role of a home educator in Macao, that she supplemented her son’s education with homeschooling materials, taking his son’s learning journey beyond the traditional curriculum. Although homeschooling is not permitted in Macao under Law No. 9/2006 (Fundamental Law of Non-tertiary Education System), which mandates school-based learning for children aged 5–15, Elizabeth firmly believes that part of homeschooling techniques could be applied at every day’s life. For example, accelerated learning techniques and internationally recognized programs, such as GCSE, can empower children to learn at their own pace and enhance their mobility to other schools across regions and countries.
