Having spent over 40 years in the field of education, I have witnessed a significant evolution in teaching methods and learning environments. We have transitioned from the traditional classroom model, where "chalk and talk" were the norms, to a digital, online-based system. For children, homeschooling has transformed the traditional approach to education by allowing for greater bonding between parents and children. Unlike the conventional school setup, homeschooling fosters more daily interaction, creating opportunities for deeper connections and shared learning experiences.
Children are diverse learners. There is no "one size fits all" approach to their education. Some children are naturally introverted, while others are extroverted, each with distinct preferences for how they engage with learning. Homeschooling provides this flexibility to adapt to each child's unique learning style, interests, and pace.
One of the deciding factors is when parents are spending more time through homeschooling their children as this fosters stronger connections between them. This increased interaction helps build closer relationships, creating a supportive learning environment where priorities, important family values as well as worldviews, can be shared and reinforced more meaningfully.
Homeschooled children are less exposed to bullying, peer pressure, and other social stressors that are often found in traditional school environments, paving a way for these children to dislike school. It therefore creates a safer, more supportive atmosphere where children can focus on learning without the negative influences that can disrupt their emotional well-being.
The only factor that is affected is their social skills as they may have fewer chances to interact with peers, and be exposed to the diversity of experiences found in a traditional school setting. But there are many parents like Dr Vivien Lai, who made an effort to network with parents of other home schooled children, and they are able to organize little get-togethers, make educational visits and the element of social skills is developed.
I am very proud of Dr Vivien Lai who has homeschooled her daughter while she herself completed a Doctorate in Education and Doctorate in Business Administration. I wish her the best in her passion as she continues to reach greater heights. All the best!!
